easy fundraisers

Does anyone else find this selfish and annoying?

For instance I was once approached in my local pub by a group of "firefighters" who were going to walk the Great Wall of China for charity. They wanted me to sponsor them, i.e., give them money. When I enquired further I found out that the sponsorship money would pay all their airfares, hotel fees etc and any money LEFT OVER would go to charity.

I think this pattern of behaviour is fairly common, i.e., people doing fairly selfish activities but tying it in with "charity work" in order to get finance. Why don’ they do something nearer home, for instance pick up all the needles in the public park "for charity" or something LESS selfish that would benefit the community?

Voting is an example of active citizenship as it’s something that changes many things in our surroundings and it’s very important because it helps us gain new skills and knowledge.

But how is being involved in charity work an example of being an active citizen??

Thanks :)

I’m really into charity work and I want to start a club linked to a charity. Some charities allow student involvement and encourage students to create clubs and find creative ways to raise money for the chairty (eg. Invisible Children) My school already raises money towards Invisible Children and it has been successful.

How can I do charity work overseas with a college degree or fluency in another language? It seems Peace Corps requires a college degree.
Please show me where there is the kind of poverty in the USA that exists in third world countries.

I’m 15 years of age and really want to do volunteer work or charity work. However, i know that many places only accept 16+ which isn’t very helpful to me.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Oh yeah, if anyone could give me some places in southern UK then that would be great. Cheers!
